Bubbles

Friendly Bubble, 2021, installation, paper towel, school glue, prints

Inspired by the term “personal space bubble”, Wu created this installation discussing

“what is a friendly physical interaction?”

with her audience.

The audience is asked to write down their answer before they enter the piece. Each bubble represents an act of physical contacts, such as a hug, handshake, cheek kiss, and more.

Distanced Hug, 2021, Installation, paper towel, school glue, lights, chair with wheels

The idea of using the “personal space bubbles” into a hugging form creatur came from the research the artist did in a class by asking people what physical interaction do they feel most comfortable with either people they first met or any close friends.

Eventually, the result was “hugging.”

Due to the current Covid situation, it not only stops us from seeing people in person but also has us lose that intimate interaction that we used to have with others. The use of paper towels creates that sense of fragileness that drives people away even if the sculpture is made.

Real Connection/ Re-Connection

The dependence on social media grew under the pandemic.
We searched for connections on these platform but so was the anxiety that came along with it. It is easy to share about life, but hard to receive responses with care.
